1. AWS is the economic engine

AWS produced roughly 60% of Amazon’s segment operating income in Q2 2026 despite representing about one-fifth of consolidated sales. That imbalance matters. Retail also supports other high-value services. Prime raises purchase frequency and loyalty; third-party seller services deepen selection; and the marketplace produces valuable intent data for advertising. 3. Advertising adds attractive economics

Amazon advertising reaches consumers close to the point of purchase. That high-intent position is strategically valuable and generally requires less physical capital than retail fulfillment. Although Amazon does not report advertising as a separate operating segment, sustained growth here can improve the profit mix of the broader commerce ecosystem.

4. Free cash flow requires careful interpretation

Trailing-12-month operating cash flow rose strongly, yet free cash flow fell to a $7.6 billion outflow because property and equipment purchases increased dramatically. This is the central question for AMZN shareholders: how much of the spending is temporary capacity expansion, and how much represents a permanently higher maintenance burden in an AI-intensive cloud industry?
