Broadcom (AVGO) Stock Analysis 2026: AI Chips, Networking, and VMware

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) is no longer simply a diversified semiconductor supplier. It combines custom artificial-intelligence accelerators, data-center networking, wireless and connectivity chips with a large infrastructure-software portfolio built around VMware, mainframe software, cybersecurity, and enterprise tools.

That combination produced extraordinary growth in fiscal 2026. It also makes Broadcom more complex to value. Investors must separate organic demand from acquisitions, compare GAAP and adjusted results carefully, and weigh powerful free-cash-flow generation against debt, customer concentration, software integration, and elevated expectations for AI infrastructure.

Business model: two engines under one company

Broadcom reports two segments. Semiconductor solutions includes custom AI accelerators, Ethernet switching and routing products, optical components, broadband and connectivity products, storage controllers, wireless components, industrial chips, and intellectual-property licensing. Infrastructure software includes VMware private-cloud technology, mainframe software, cybersecurity, enterprise software, and Fibre Channel storage-area-network products.

The semiconductor business benefits from high-value engineering, long design cycles, and products embedded deeply in customers’ systems. The software business adds subscriptions, support contracts, and mission-critical infrastructure that can be difficult to replace. Together, they give Broadcom exposure to physical AI infrastructure and the software used to operate enterprise computing environments.

Fiscal 2025 revenue was $63.89 billion, up 24%. Semiconductor solutions generated $36.86 billion, or 58% of revenue, while infrastructure software generated $27.03 billion, or 42%. Segment operating income was $21.23 billion for semiconductors and $20.77 billion for software. Software therefore contributed nearly as much segment operating income on substantially less revenue.

Latest financial performance

For the third quarter of fiscal 2026, ended August 2, Broadcom reported revenue of $29.59 billion, up 86% from $15.95 billion in the prior-year period. GAAP operating income rose to $15.96 billion from $5.89 billion, GAAP net income reached $13.09 billion, and GAAP diluted earnings per share increased to $2.68 from $0.85.

Adjusted figures were higher. Non-GAAP operating income was $20.10 billion and non-GAAP diluted EPS was $3.32. These measures exclude items including acquisition-related intangible amortization, stock-based compensation, restructuring costs, and certain tax adjustments. They can help compare operating periods, but the exclusions are real economic costs and should not replace GAAP analysis.

Quarterly semiconductor revenue was $20.84 billion, or 70% of total revenue, and increased 127% year over year. Infrastructure-software revenue was $8.75 billion, or 30%, and increased 29%. The company guided for approximately $34.8 billion of fiscal fourth-quarter revenue and a non-GAAP operating margin near 66%. Guidance is management’s estimate, not a guaranteed outcome.

AI accelerators and networking drive the current surge

Broadcom reported $16.7 billion of AI semiconductor revenue in fiscal 3Q 2026, up 221% year over year and 54% sequentially. Management expected this figure to reach approximately $21.7 billion in the fourth quarter. The opportunity includes custom accelerators—often called XPUs—as well as the networking and optical connectivity required to link very large AI clusters.

Custom silicon can offer hyperscale customers better performance, power use, and economics for specific workloads than general-purpose alternatives. Broadcom also benefits when growing clusters require more switches, network interfaces, interconnects, and optical components. This broad participation is a competitive strength because AI infrastructure needs both compute and communication.

However, the growth rate should not be treated as permanent. AI projects involve large, concentrated deployments whose timing can move revenue between quarters. Customer demand may slow if model economics disappoint, power or data-center constraints emerge, or buyers digest previously installed capacity.

VMware changed Broadcom’s earnings profile

Broadcom’s infrastructure-software segment includes the VMware business acquired in November 2023. Fiscal 2025 software revenue rose 26%, driven primarily by demand for VMware Cloud Foundation, license revenue from contracts without termination rights, and the transition toward subscription licensing. Segment operating income rose 49%, also benefiting from lower labor costs following integration.

VMware gives Broadcom a major position in virtualized private and hybrid-cloud infrastructure. Enterprise workloads can be costly and risky to migrate, creating switching costs. Broadcom’s strategy emphasizes a narrower platform, larger customers, subscriptions, and operational efficiency.

That strategy can improve margins and contract value, but it creates risks. Customers may resist pricing, packaging, or partner-program changes; migrate workloads; or reduce their VMware footprint. Investors should monitor renewal quality and durable customer value, not merely near-term margin expansion.

Broadcom’s competitive advantages

  • Deep engineering relationships: Custom chips require close collaboration and long development cycles, making supplier replacement difficult after a design is established.
  • Networking breadth: Broadcom supplies multiple components needed to move data through AI and conventional data centers.
  • Scale and intellectual property: Decades of semiconductor development support a broad patent portfolio and substantial research investment.
  • Mission-critical software: VMware, mainframe, security, and storage-networking products often support workloads where reliability and migration risk matter.
  • Operational discipline: Broadcom has historically concentrated investment on franchises where it expects defensible technology and strong cash returns.

Free cash flow, debt, and capital allocation

Broadcom’s fab-light semiconductor model and high-margin software operations support strong cash conversion. In fiscal 2025, operating cash flow was $27.54 billion and purchases of property, plant, and equipment were $623 million. This simple subtraction implies approximately $26.91 billion of free cash flow before considering differences between the company’s definition and other analytical adjustments.

In fiscal 3Q 2026, operating cash flow reached $14.20 billion. After $532 million of capital expenditure, company-defined free cash flow was $13.67 billion, equal to 46% of revenue. Broadcom paid $3.1 billion in quarterly dividends and declared another $0.65-per-share dividend.

The balance sheet deserves attention because VMware was a large acquisition. Broadcom reported $67.12 billion of debt principal at fiscal 2025 year-end, down from $69.85 billion a year earlier. Cash at the end of fiscal 3Q 2026 was $24.0 billion. Strong free cash flow provides debt-reduction capacity, but debt should be assessed against sustainable—not peak—cash generation.

Risks investors should understand

  • Customer concentration: One distributor represented 32% of fiscal 2025 revenue, while the five largest end customers collectively represented about 40%. Large AI orders can amplify volatility.
  • AI spending cycle: Expectations assume continued hyperscaler investment and successful deployment of custom accelerators and networking systems.
  • VMware execution: Pricing, licensing, product, or channel changes may encourage customers and partners to consider alternatives.
  • Debt and acquisition risk: Interest and refinancing obligations reduce flexibility if cash generation weakens.
  • Third-party manufacturing: Broadcom depends heavily on external foundries, packaging providers, and supply-chain partners.
  • Export controls and geopolitics: Semiconductor restrictions, tariffs, and regional tensions can limit customers or disrupt manufacturing.
  • Technology transitions: Products can lose relevance if Broadcom misses architectural, networking, wireless, or software-platform changes.
  • Non-GAAP dependence: Large differences between GAAP and adjusted earnings require careful treatment of stock compensation and acquisition-related amortization.

Valuation framework for AVGO

A single price-to-earnings ratio can be misleading because Broadcom combines rapidly growing AI semiconductors, recurring software, purchase-accounting charges, stock compensation, and substantial debt. A practical valuation should use at least three cross-checks.

  1. Normalized earnings: Begin with GAAP operating economics, then decide which acquisition and compensation costs genuinely should be normalized. Apply a multiple reflecting growth durability, cyclicality, and balance-sheet risk.
  2. Free-cash-flow yield: Estimate sustainable operating cash flow after working-capital normalization and necessary capital spending. Compare that cash flow with equity value and enterprise value.
  3. Segment analysis: Value semiconductor and infrastructure software separately. Use conservative AI growth and margins for semiconductors, and renewal, retention, and normalized margins for software. Subtract net debt.

A premium valuation may be supported by AI exposure, custom-silicon relationships, networking leadership, software switching costs, and unusually strong cash conversion. The premium becomes difficult to justify if AI orders normalize sharply, VMware customers leave, adjusted costs persist indefinitely, or debt reduction stalls. Investors should model base, optimistic, and downside cases rather than extrapolate the 86% quarterly revenue increase.

  • Track AI semiconductor revenue separately from total semiconductor revenue.
  • Compare custom-accelerator growth with networking and optical growth.
  • Monitor infrastructure-software revenue, renewal quality, and VMware customer retention.
  • Reconcile GAAP operating income and EPS with management’s non-GAAP figures.
  • Measure free cash flow after stock-based compensation and working-capital effects.
  • Follow gross debt, net debt, interest expense, and debt repayments.
  • Watch customer concentration and changes in large deployment schedules.
  • Compare dividends and repurchases with debt reduction and reinvestment needs.

Bottom line

Broadcom has built a rare combination of AI compute, data-center networking, and mission-critical infrastructure software. Fiscal 3Q 2026 showed the potential of that portfolio: $29.6 billion of revenue, $16.7 billion of AI semiconductor revenue, and $13.7 billion of company-defined free cash flow.

The central question is not whether current growth is impressive—it clearly is. The question is how much of it can persist after AI deployment growth normalizes, and whether VMware’s profitability remains durable without damaging customer relationships. Broadcom may merit a premium for its assets and execution, but customer concentration, debt, integration choices, and high expectations demand a valuation with an adequate margin of safety.
