Intuit Inc. (NASDAQ: INTU) has evolved from desktop accounting and tax software into a broad financial-technology platform serving approximately 93 million consumers, businesses, and accountants. QuickBooks helps businesses manage accounting, payroll, payments, and financing. TurboTax and Intuit’s professional tax products support tax preparation. Credit Karma connects consumers with financial products and insights. Mailchimp provides marketing tools.
Management’s current strategy is to make these products an “AI-driven expert platform”: a system that combines proprietary financial data, AI agents, and human experts to complete work rather than merely display information. Fiscal 2026 produced strong revenue, operating-income, and cash-flow growth. The investment question is whether AI and cross-platform integration can sustain that growth while Intuit improves Mailchimp, controls stock-based compensation, and protects customer trust.
Business model
QuickBooks and Global Business Solutions
QuickBooks is the center of Intuit’s small-business ecosystem. Accounting subscriptions establish the customer relationship, while payroll, payments, bill pay, lending, and other services increase revenue and make the platform harder to replace. Intuit Enterprise Suite extends the model toward larger mid-market organizations with more complex workflows.
Global Business Solutions generated $12.86 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue, up 16%. Online Ecosystem revenue rose 19% to $9.92 billion. Within that total, QuickBooks Online Accounting increased 23% to $5.05 billion, driven by higher effective prices, customer growth, and mix. Online Services increased 16% to $4.87 billion, supported by payments, payroll, and QuickBooks Capital.
TurboTax and professional tax
TurboTax monetizes do-it-yourself tax preparation and assisted experiences. Fiscal 2026 TurboTax revenue increased 7% to $5.30 billion. TurboTax Live grew 37% and represented 53% of TurboTax revenue, showing that customers are moving toward higher-value offerings that combine software with expert support. However, total U.S. TurboTax federal units declined 2% to 39.0 million, so revenue growth depended partly on mix and monetization rather than unit expansion. ProTax revenue increased 4% to $647 million.
Credit Karma
Credit Karma provides consumers with credit information and personalized financial-product recommendations. Intuit generally earns revenue when users engage with partner offers such as credit cards, personal loans, insurance, mortgages, and other products. Fiscal 2026 Credit Karma revenue increased 20% to $2.64 billion, supported by personal loans, credit cards, and insurance. The model is asset-light compared with a traditional lender, but revenue depends on financial institutions’ underwriting appetite and marketing budgets.
Mailchimp
Mailchimp offers email, social media, SMS, landing pages, advertisements, and website tools for small and mid-market businesses. Its strategic logic is to connect customer acquisition with QuickBooks’ financial and operational data. Actual growth has lagged the rest of the Online Ecosystem. Intuit began managing Mailchimp as a separate segment on August 1, 2026, and fiscal 2027 guidance of $1.256–$1.266 billion implies a decline of 1% to flat growth. Separate reporting should make progress and resource allocation easier to evaluate.
Latest results: fiscal 2026
| Metric | Fiscal 2026 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $21.45 billion | +14% |
| Global Business Solutions revenue | $12.86 billion | +16% |
| Consumer revenue | $8.58 billion | +11% |
| GAAP operating income | $5.88 billion | +20% |
| GAAP net income | $4.57 billion | +18% |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $16.46 | +20% |
| Operating cash flow | $8.84 billion | +42% |
| Share-based compensation | $2.06 billion | +4% |
Revenue increased $2.62 billion and GAAP operating income grew faster than revenue, expanding operating margin to approximately 27.4% from 26.1%. The business remained highly cash generative. Subtracting $175 million of property-and-equipment purchases and $46 million of capitalized internal-use software from operating cash flow produces approximately $8.62 billion of simple free cash flow. That figure benefited from non-cash charges and working-capital movements, including substantial stock-based compensation, so it should not be viewed as owner earnings without adjustment.
Fiscal 2026 “Big Bets” collectively grew 34% and represented 30% of revenue. Intuit repurchased $5.5 billion of stock, and weighted-average diluted shares declined 2% because buybacks more than offset stock-compensation dilution. Cash and investments were $7.2 billion, compared with $7.7 billion of total debt at year-end.
For fiscal 2027, management guided to total revenue of $23.28–$23.51 billion, growth of 9%–10%, and GAAP operating income of $7.41–$7.49 billion. Segment guidance reflects slower TurboTax growth, continued double-digit Global Business Solutions and Credit Karma growth, and approximately flat Mailchimp revenue. Guidance is not a guarantee, but it provides a useful baseline for monitoring execution.
AI strategy: from answers to completed work
Intuit’s AI thesis rests on three assets: large quantities of permissioned financial data, domain expertise in tax and accounting, and a network of human experts. Its proprietary Generative AI Operating System, or GenOS, supports AI agents intended to automate tasks, manage workflows, identify insights, and take actions with the customer in control.
For businesses, the opportunity is a financial “control tower” that coordinates accounting, cash flow, payroll, payments, marketing, and customer management. For consumers, Intuit can connect credit insights, financial-product selection, money management, and tax filing. Human experts can intervene when work is complex or customers want reassurance. If successful, done-for-you experiences can raise retention, average revenue per customer, and adoption of adjacent services.
The risk is that generative AI lowers software differentiation by making basic tax, bookkeeping, and marketing features easier to build. AI outputs involving money and taxes also require unusual accuracy, explainability, compliance, privacy, and security. An incorrect automated action can be more damaging than an incorrect suggestion. Intuit must prove that its data and workflow integration produce measurable customer outcomes, not merely conversational features.
Competitive moat
- Embedded financial records: historical accounting, payroll, tax, and transaction data make switching costly and improve personalization.
- Trust and compliance: tax calculations, filing, payroll, and payments require accuracy, security, and continuous regulatory updates.
- Ecosystem breadth: accounting can lead to payroll, payments, lending, marketing, and expert services; tax users can enter through Credit Karma and TurboTax.
- Professional network: accountants, bookkeepers, and tax experts extend the platform beyond software and can influence customer product choices.
- Data and distribution: tens of millions of customer relationships provide feedback, cross-sell opportunities, and training signals under Intuit’s privacy controls.
Pricing power is visible in QuickBooks Online Accounting growth, but higher prices are sustainable only when customer value rises. The strongest evidence of moat improvement would be higher retention, customer growth, increasing use of services, and better business outcomes—not revenue growth driven solely by price.
Key risks
- AI disruption and execution: new competitors may reduce software differentiation, while Intuit’s agents could produce inaccurate or harmful outputs.
- Data security and privacy: Intuit holds sensitive tax, identity, payroll, credit, and payment information. A breach could cause financial and reputational harm.
- Tax-system change: government filing programs, regulation, or simplified tax rules could alter TurboTax demand.
- Credit Karma cyclicality: partners can reduce offers and marketing spending when credit conditions tighten.
- Small-business exposure: business failures, employment weakness, payment volume, and formation rates affect QuickBooks customers.
- Mailchimp execution: sustained low growth may signal weak integration, competition, or impaired acquisition economics.
- Stock-based compensation: fiscal 2026 expense was $2.06 billion, equal to about 45% of GAAP net income. Buybacks must be evaluated net of dilution.
- Acquisition accounting: acquired-intangible amortization and goodwill can obscure the economic return on purchased businesses.
Valuation framework without a market-price shortcut
A sound Intuit valuation should begin with normalized per-share free cash flow rather than management-adjusted earnings alone. Start with operating cash flow, subtract property, equipment, and capitalized software, then deduct a reasonable economic cost for stock compensation. Consider whether QuickBooks Capital receivable growth creates additional funding needs, and separate temporary working-capital benefits.
Next, model the businesses separately. QuickBooks can justify a premium if Online Ecosystem revenue continues growing through customers and services. TurboTax should be evaluated on paying users, Live adoption, retention, and revenue per return. Credit Karma deserves a more cyclical assumption. Mailchimp should not receive a high-growth multiple until results demonstrate renewed growth.
| Scenario | Key assumptions | Primary evidence to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | QuickBooks growth slows, TurboTax units decline, Credit Karma cycles down, Mailchimp remains flat | Customer additions, partner demand, retention, pricing |
| Balanced | Global Business Solutions grows low teens, assisted tax expands, margins improve gradually | Online Ecosystem mix, TurboTax Live, GAAP margin |
| Strong execution | AI agents lift retention and cross-sell while Mailchimp returns to growth | Adoption, measurable customer outcomes, per-share FCF |
Apply a discount rate and terminal growth assumption appropriate for a mature financial-software company, then compare the estimated value with the market only at the decision point. The greater the valuation premium, the more conservative the assumptions should be. These scenarios are analytical tools, not forecasts or recommendations.
Investor checklist
- Separate QuickBooks Online growth from price, customer count, and product mix.
- Track Online Services growth in payments, payroll, and lending.
- Compare TurboTax units, paying users, Live customers, and revenue per customer.
- Monitor Credit Karma by vertical and through changes in the credit cycle.
- Demand measurable AI outcomes: retention, completed work, time saved, and cross-sell.
- Review Mailchimp separately beginning in fiscal 2027.
- Reconcile GAAP income, operating cash flow, capitalized software, stock compensation, dilution, and buybacks.
- Compare fiscal 2027 results with guidance and long-term margin assumptions.

Bottom line
Intuit owns several trusted financial franchises and is using QuickBooks as the foundation of an expanding small-business ecosystem. Fiscal 2026 combined 14% revenue growth, 20% GAAP operating-income growth, and strong cash generation. TurboTax Live and Credit Karma added meaningful growth, while QuickBooks Online remained the primary engine.
AI could deepen the moat by turning financial data into completed, compliant workflows. It could also invite new competition and increase the consequences of errors. Investors should focus on per-share economics, customer outcomes, GAAP profitability, stock compensation, and Mailchimp execution. Intuit’s quality does not eliminate the need for disciplined valuation assumptions.
